Questions
My link will not play — why?
Most often the address points at a web page rather than the media itself. A link ending in .mp4 or .mp3 is a file and will play; a link to a page that contains a video is not. Some servers also refuse to serve their files to other websites, which no player can work around.
Can I play magnet or torrent links?
Yes. Paste a magnet:?xt=… link or a direct link to a .torrent file and it opens in the Webtor player, where you choose which file to play. It needs a few seconds to find peers, and speed depends on how many people are seeding. A .torrent link only works if the site hosting it allows other websites to read it. Only play torrents you have the right to watch.
Why will MKV, AVI or FLV not play?
Browsers do not ship a demuxer for those containers, so a direct .mkv or .avi link will not play in Chrome, Firefox or Safari regardless of what is inside it. Converting to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio makes the same file play everywhere, and tools like HandBrake or VLC do it in a couple of clicks. Inside a torrent, the Webtor player converts these formats on its servers, so they play there.
Does it download anything?
Nothing is copied to this server. Direct links play straight from their source in your browser. Torrents are fetched and streamed by Webtor.io's servers, not ours. Only the link and the title you type are stored here.
Who can see the links I paste?
Anyone who has the share link. Normal links can also appear in the Trending list on this page. Do not paste anything private, and do not paste anything you do not have the right to share.
Why does playback sometimes start muted?
Browsers block audio that starts on its own before you have interacted with the page. Where autoplay is refused the player simply waits for you to press play, rather than failing silently as it used to.
